Germany’s Bundesliga is one of the most famous leagues in the world of football, as it is a competition that attracts a number of the world’s best players and managers, as well as millions and millions of fans regularly each and every season.

Of course, many will point to the fact that it is a competition that continues to be dominated by FC Bayern Munich, however, there have been the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen and Schalke 04 over the years that have managed to provide some excellent football action.

History & Teams

Having been established in 1963, the German Bundesliga is one of the newest divisions to have been created and exist. Despite its more recent inception compared to many of Europe’s other top divisions, it remains one of the ‘Big Five’ leagues that are collectively known worldwide.

Of course, competitive German football has been around for a lot longer than 1963, with clubs playing in a number of regional divisions before the current format that sees all of the best football clubs play against each other come into force.

FC Bayern Munich has dominated much of competitive German football over the year. The Bavarian football club has managed to obtain fewer than 30 top division titles throughout their history (up to the 20/21 Bundesliga campaign). 1. FC Nurnberg are the closest to them in regards to top honours, although they have only managed to obtain a minimum of nine, whereas Borussia Dortmund and Schalke 04 sit on eight and seven respectively.

Best Players & Managers

It should not come as a surprise that the German Bundesliga has become a highly popular football league for some of the best footballers in the world, with many of the players to have featured in the division has gone to win major honours with their club and countries, including FIFA World Cup winners.

For instance, FC Bayern Munich is one such club that has possessed a number of players who have gone on to achieve some rather huge things throughout their footballing careers, whilst they have also seen some of the best home talent come through the game.

Individuals to have played in the German Bundesliga include the likes of Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Muller, Serge Gnabry, Jadon Sancho, Jude Bellingham, Erling Braut Haaland, Miroslav Klose, Lukas Podolski, Mesut Ozil, Bastien Schweinsteiger, Manuel Neuer, Philipp Lahm, Oliver Kahn and Michael Ballack over the years, whilst a little earlier has seen legendary figures such as Gerd Muller – who scored 365 goals, Franz Beckenbauer, Lothar Matthaus, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Sepp Maier and Jupp Heynckes to name a handful.

Naturally, there have been some sensational managers to have coached teams in the Bundesliga over the years, with the likes of Julian Naglesmann, Pep Guardiola, Jurgen Klopp, Carlo Ancelotti and Thomas Tuchel some of the most famous in recent years, whilst men like Franz Beckenbauer, Jupp Heynckes and Ottmar Hitzfield have all been incredibly successful.

Historic & Memorable moments

Several iconic moments have happened in the Bundesliga over the years, although some have not been rather positive. For instance, the 2020/21 demise of Schalke 04 – which in truth started in the season prior – saw them relegated after winning a handful of games.

In addition, the fall of 1.FC Kaiserslautern is well-documented amongst many German Bundesliga fans, as was the rise of RB Leipzig.

Furthermore, FC Bayern Munich’s dominance at the top of the charts has been unprecedented, as the 20/21 season saw them go for their ninth consecutive Bundesliga title.
