The English Premier League is one of the world’s biggest football leagues. Many consider it to be the best in the world due to the competitive nature and the number of quality football clubs that continue to take part each season.
Known worldwide as the EPL, the English Premier League is a brilliant option for football bettors. It is one of the more unpredictable competitions to occur, with each team capable of beating each other.
History & Teams
The English Premier League is full of rich history, despite having only been created in the 1992/93 season. Of course, English football had started long before then – with the First Division having started in 1888 – but it has been argued that English football has never been better since the creation and establishment of the top-flight as it is known today.
Naturally, many of England’s best football clubs have all competed in the league format, with many of them having been a mainstay in the division over the near-three decades it has been going. The likes of Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are all considered to be the ‘Big Six’ of the division, but there are many other teams that continue to challenge for it.
Manchester United hold the record number of league titles as of 2020/21, with 20 to their name – throughout the history of the top division – whilst Liverpool have 18. Chelsea and Manchester City have also managed numerous titles since it became the English Premier League, whilst Arsenal were also successful for a brief period in the early 2000s.
Best Players & Managers
As the English Premier League is considered one of the best domestic football leagues in existence, the involvement of the world’s best players and managers has also seen its appeal worldwide increase immensely.
Whilst there have been a number of legendary players to have featured in matches played in the division, there have always been some quality individuals. Some of the biggest names to be thought of can include Cristiano Ronaldo, Didier Drogba, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Sergio Aguero, Eden Hazard, Harry Kane and Mohamed Salah.
Of course, others have included David Beckham, Ruud van Nistlerooy, Thierry Henry; the list could honestly go on and on.
Likewise, the list of top managers to have coached in the English Premier League is also lengthy. And it would be unforgivable not to mention the likes of Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho, Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger and Jurgen Klopp as a snapshot of top managers to have graced the sidelines.
Historic & Memorable moments
The English Premier League is steeped in history and tradition, which has only further helped to provide some truly historical moments throughout its existence.
One of the most historic moments, though, came back in the 2015/16 campaign, when Leicester City, a team which had almost been relegated from the league the year before shocked the world and won the title after being priced at 5000-1 at the beginning of the season.
We are unlikely to see a fairytale-like that again, however with how competitive the English Premier League is and can be, perhaps it will not be too long before we see even more stories like that in the future.
