Serie A

Serie A is one of the biggest European football leagues around and is played in the country of Italy, and it features some of the best club football sides that have ever been involved in football.

The competition is steeped in tradition, with the likes of Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan, AS Roma, SSC Napoli and many others have all managed to create some history for themselves and Italian football as a whole.

History & Teams

Serie A has plenty of history behind it, having been initially created in 1898, although it has followed the current layout since 1929. It is one of the oldest leagues in the world, which is just another reason to why it is steeped in tradition and history.

Since its inception, the Serie A has largely been dominated by Juventus, as the club from Turin has managed to win no fewer than 36 titles, whilst the two Milan-based clubs – AC Milan and Inter Milan – both follow behind, although Inter has taken the lead with 19 titles over 18 as of the end of the 20/21 season.

It should be noted that Juventus have also had Scudettos (the trophy obtained when winning Serie A) taken off them in a dark moment of history in the Italian league, as they saw their 2004/05 title revoked because of their involvement in trying to get referees to take charge of their matches that would be favourable to them. Others such as AC Milan, Fiorentina, Lazio and Reggina were also found guilty, but Juventus suffered the worst punishment of them all.

Best Players & Managers

With the calibre and the appeal of clubs such as Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan, AS Roma and so on, including the likes of Parma at one moment in history, the Serie A competition has continued to attract a number of world-class players.

Recent history has seen individuals such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Alvaro Morata, Gonzalo Higuain, Paulo Dybala, Romelu Lukaku, Lautauro Martinez, Edin Dzeko and many, many others all play, whilst delving just a little further back into the history books will highlight some of the biggest names football has ever seen.

For instance, AC Milan has had players like Andriy Shevchenko, Filippo Inzaghi, Rui Costa, Kaka, Paolo Maldini, Dida, Alessandro Nesta and so many others, whilst AS Roma have had legendary footballers such as Gabriel Batistuta, Francesco Totti, Daniele De Rossi, Cafu and Emerson, as well as plenty of others. The list simply does not stop there as the likes of Diego Maradona, Roberto Baggio, Gianluigi Buffon and Fabio Cannavaro have all played in Serie A, as well.

Of course, there have also been a number of successful football managers to have competed in the Serie A as well, with individuals such as Fabio Capello, Giovanni Trappatoni, Carlo Ancelotti, Jose Mourinho, Roberto Mancini, Marcello Lippi and Antonio Conte just a couple of the star names to have guided clubs to success.

Historic & Memorable moments

Serie A has had a number of memorable moments throughout its existence, although as already described, some are not quite as positive as the league perhaps deserves.

As mentioned, Juventus were found guilty of picking their own referees to try and influence their matches, whilst Parma had folded and entered administration that rocked the division in certain ways when it happened; although this has happened on multiple occasions.

Nonetheless, there have been positive moments, such as when Juventus won the Serie A title five years in a row, whilst AC Milan went on a 58-game unbeaten run between 1991 and 1993.
